Local Cub Scouts Finds Fun and Surprise While Hiking the Wissahickon

Cub Scout Pack 173 of the Baden-Powell Boy Scout District

There’s lots of adventure trekking over steep terrain and woodland trails on a brisk fall day, especially if you’re a Cub Scout! That was the consensus of these hikers – Cubs and their families who are part of Flourtown-based Cub Scout Pack 173 - who spent their pre-Thanksgiving Sunday afternoon exploring the hills and valleys along the Wissahickon Creek in Chestnut Hill.

Of course there were things to learn along the way: things like nature, safety, wilderness survival, “Leave No Trace. That is all an important part of Cub Scouting. There were also sweat and tired legs as the Pack overcame obstacles. But all that was quickly forgotten when the Cubs discovered the well-hidden statue of Teedyuscung, the Indian who guards the park! Based on a vote taken at the end of the hike, Pack 173 will definitely do this again!

Cub Scout Pack 173 meets monthly at the First Presbyterian Church on Bethlehem Pike in Flourtown and is open to all boys in grades 1 through 5. Its members include boys from the Springfield, Upper Dublin, and Colonial school district, as well as St. Genevieve’s, Germantown Friends, Norwood-Fontbonne and Ancillae-Assumpta Academies. For information on joining the pack, contact Miss Ellie (4pack173@gmail.com), Miss Kim (kwmshm@concast.net) or Mister Ed (egrivner@comcast.net).
