Thousands Still Without Power After PECO Substation Fire In Philly

A few thousand PECO customers are without power still after a fire broke out at a PECO substation in Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon.
As of 4:35 p.m. Wednesday, PECO's outage map shows about 4,300 customers are in the dark still.
PECO said it hopes to restore power to all customers by noon.

Philadelphia High School for Girls on 1400 W. Olney Ave. and EW Rhodes Middle School on 2900 W. Clearfield Street closed Wednesday due to the outage.
The fire broke out at about 2:05 p.m. at the Nicetown-Tioga PECO substation on West Westmoreland Street.

Because the fire was electrical, crews had to wait for power to be cut from the substation to battle the blaze.
Firefighters later used chemicals and fire suppression powder to contain the fire and had it under control by about 5:30 p.m., according to NBC10
At the peak of the outage, about 35,000 customers were powerless.
Officials have not determined what caused the fire, according to NBC10.
