Valentine's Day Etiquette - Do's & Don'ts

Valentine's Day is near and expectations are on the rise! Many will be elated and many will be deflated! Here are a few suggestions!

Ask First
If you are dating someone new do not assume they celebrate. Discuss the day in advance and ask direct questions. If the answer is yes – find out if their plan is to spend it with you and how. Surprises are nice, but not if you’re surprised with a no show!

Gift Giving & New Relationships
Do not spend your weeks’ salary on a gift for your new friend without asking in advance what type of things they would appreciate. Men – I caution you to stay away from the lingerie! Ladies – I encourage you to do the same! In a new relationship this can send the Wrong message, unless he or she is Mr. or Mrs. Right!
The best gifts are gifts that are chosen with the person in mind. For example, your new friend mentioned that she enjoys having her nails done, give her a gift certificate for a spa or nail salon. Be sure to do your research to make sure it is a reputable establishment. Ladies, if your gentleman friend has a favorite sports team or likes working out, something with the team logo or monogrammed gym paraphernalia is a good idea. Be sure to pay attention to what they tell you! If they tell you they would just like to have a nice dinner with you, then listen and make it happen!

Family & Friends
Valentine’s day is not just for lovers, it’s a day that we can show everyone we care about appreciation. Celebrate all of your special relationships, friends and family! Give them a Happy Valentine’s phone call or card. Remember, you don’t have wait for a holiday to do this!!!
