Cranberry Library To Get $750,000 Makeover
The Cranberry Township Community Chest is launching its most financially ambitious project ever.

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA - The Cranberry Public Library is in line for $750,000 in improvements that will include technology upgrades and the addition of a makerspace with tools and workbenches that should provide patrons with a hands-on learning environment.
The library upgrades are the focus of Cranberry Township Community Chest’s 2019 project of the year, according to Bruce Mazzoni, township supervisor and community chest project coordinator.
“No asset in our community is used more by residents of every age than Cranberry’s Library,” Mazzoni said. “We are looking forward enthusiastically to the community’s response to this ambitious project.”

The makerspace essentially is a small workshop designed for collaboration and for making things. Over the past few years, makerspaces have been installed in school classrooms, private subscription facilities, foundation supported shops, commercial prototyping studios and public libraries.
The technology improvements will include radio frequency identification, a system that uses electronic signals rather than bar code scanning to identify books and cardholders for simpler, faster, more reliable checkouts and filing.
Automatic sliding doors will minimize the difficulty of getting into and out of the library for patrons using wheelchairs or walkers. Energy-efficient LED lighting, light enhanced painting, environmentally friendly carpeting and improved ergonomics – including upgraded staff areas – will also be included in the project.

The building that houses Cranberry’s Municipal Center and library was built in 1963 to house Perry Forge – a metalworking factory. CTCC is calling its 2019 project “Forge Ahead,” a reference both to the origins of its home and the library’s new capabilities.
