Seneca Valley Alum Selected in MLB Draft

The New York Mets pick Cory Mazzoni in the second round.

On Tuesday, the New York Mets selected 21-year-old Cory Mazzoni as their 71st overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft.

A pitcher at North Carolina State, Mazzoni, who stands 6-foot 1 and weighs 194 pounds, graduated from in 2008. According to his player bio on the Wolfpack website, the college junior allowed just 21 hits and struck out 89 during his senior year of high school and helped lead Seneca Valley to the sectional championship.

The Washington Nationals drafted the Evan City native in the 26th round right after high school, but he choose to attend college in North Carolina.

In 16 starts this season, he is 6-6 with a 3.30 ERA with 137 strikeouts in 114 2/3 innings.
