Seneca Valley Celebrates Fall Sports Champions

The girls volleyball teams was one of the teams dominating the WPIAL this season.

They might not have taken home the grand prize at the PIAA championshipsΒ in York last weekend, but members of the girls volleyball team still are winners.

Crowned the WPIAL Class AAA champions last week after defeating Pine-Richland, the girls volleyball team took third place in the PIAA girls volleyball championshipsΒ Saturday. The team also took third place last yearΒ in the PIAA championship.

With gold medals hanging from their necks, varsity volleyball players on Monday presented the school board with their WPIAL trophy.

Before the meeting began, senior Cate Seman said triumphs on the court were nothing new for Seneca Valley’s volleyball team.

β€œWe’re probably one of the most consistent sports in the school,” she said.

Athletic director Greg Caprara alsoΒ praisedΒ the other fall sports teams, including the cross-country, girls varsity soccer, boys varsity soccer and the varsity football teams.

β€œWe have had a fantastic 2011 for fall sports,” he said.

Caprara said the No. 9-seeded football team’s journey to the quarterfinals was a notable event.

β€œThis is the first time since 2002 that we have made it out of the first round of the playoffs,” he said.

SuperintendentΒ Tracey VitaleΒ said she particularly was proud because most of the district’s athletes also are honor students.

The Raiders will have more chances to prove themselves in the coming months. The winter sports season will kick off next week.
