DOYLESTOWN, PA — Phillies World Series champion and all time great Pete Rose will be in Doylestown next month to promote and sign copies of his new book.

He will appear at Doylestown Bookshop on Thursday, June 6 at 7 p.m.

Rose is one of the greatest, if most notorious and controversial, baseball players to ever live. He is the sport's all-time leader in numerous key categories, including hits (4,256), singles (3,215), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), and even outs made.

He also was handed a lifetime ban from the sport after it was discovered that he bet on games in which he was the coach. For that reason, he has never been elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, a point of great discord among sportswriters and fans.

Rose calls his new book, 'Play Hungry: The Making of a Baseball Player,' a "love letter to the game." Here's how publishers describe it:

"Rose tells us the story of how through hard work and sheer will he became one of the unlikeliest stars of the game. Guided by the dad he idolized, a local sports hero with the spirit of a champion, Pete had an All-American boyhood. But even with the coaching of his father on how to compete and play baseball the right way, Pete was cut from his team as a teenager—he wasn’t a natural. Rose was determined, though, and never would be satisfied with anything less than success. His relentless hustle and headfirst style would help him overcome his natural shortcomings, leading to a storied career..."

From 1979 to 1983, Rose played for the Phillies, and was part of the first World Series championship in franchise history in 1980.

Organizers announced a number of rules for those who attend the signing event at Doylestown Bookshop. Only books will be signed, no memorbilia. Books must be purchased at the store in order to gain a spot in line. In addition, there will be no posed photos.
