Bucks County Landmark Ranked As One Of Nation's Top Romantic Estates

A new analysis highlights the castle for its romantic atmosphere, influenced by its distinct design and popularity on social media.

DOYLESTOWN, PA — Fonthill Castle in Doylestown ranks as one of the nation's most romantic historic estates, according to the international car rental company, SIXT, which analyzed Google and TikTok search volumes and wedding venue availability in compiling its ranking.

Built between 1908 and 1912, the Bucks County castle served as the home for archaeologist, tilemaker, and historian Henry Chapman Mercer. The castle features an eclectic Medieval Revival style, incorporating soaring towers, winding staircases, and arched windows. Handcrafted Moravian tiles are integrated throughout its 44 uniquely designed rooms.

Fonthill Castle has seen increasing online interest, with travelers and history enthusiasts searching for its story across Google and TikTok, according to SIXT, with its fairy-tale architecture, eccentric legacy, and romantic intrigue contributing to its popularity. The estate is also a sought-after wedding venue.

The Doylestown landmark ranks sixth on SIXT's list of the Top 20 Most Romantic Estates in America, coming in behind Biltmore Estates in Asheville, N.C., The Breakers and the Marble House, both in Rhode Island, Iolani Palace in Honolulu, Hiawaii, and Glensheen Mansion in Duluth, Minn.

SIXT's methodology involved identifying notable estates across the U.S. using Wikipedia. They then measured overall interest and social engagement by analyzing Google and TikTok search volume. Each estate's official website was reviewed to determine the number of activities available to guests. Data for the ranking was accurate as of December 22, 2025.

Fonthill Castle recorded more than 176,000 Google searches and growing TikTok interest. This online engagement helped place it as number six on the list for those seeking Regency-era charm.
