Bucks Football Player Assaulted Cops At St. Patrick's Day Event: Police

A former running back for Delaware Valley University football team allegedly put his gridiron skills to illicit use when he assaulted and escaped from two Hoboken police officers over the weekend, authorities said.

According to the Hoboken Police Department, Christopher Smallwood, 24, of Warminster, was charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault after he turned himself in on Sunday afternoon.

The alleged assault took place during Leprecon, an annual event hosted by several Hoboken bars and restaurants which routinely sees dozens of arrests.

Police said Smallwood was reportedly involved in a fight at a Hoboken McDonalds around 2:30 a.m.

As Smallwood fled the scene, two Hoboken police officers spotted him and attempted to confront the 5 foot 11 inch, 205 pound Philadelphia native, who rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns on 30 attempts in 2013.

Smallwood then allegedly “proceeded to run over the officers” in an attempt to evade apprehension, police said.

The former Delaware Valley standout struck the two officers so hard that one suffered three broken ribs and another suffered a dislocated shoulder, police said.

Smallwood then allegedly made his escape, thanks to his “skills as a former college football running back,” Hoboken Police Chief Kenneth Ferrante said in a news release.

Emergency responders transported the two injured officers to Hoboken University Medical Center.

Both were released on Sunday and are off work on injured status, police said.
