Central Bucks Second Graders Raise $1K For Doylestown Food Pantry

The Soup for the Soul effort at Warwick Elementary was inspired by a nonfiction book about how one person can make a difference.

Warwick Elementary School second graders in Mrs. Sobusiak’s class have raised $1,000 for the Doylestown Food Pantry through a “Soup for the Soul” iniative. The effort was inspired by a nonfiction book about how one person can make a difference, Central Bucks officials say.

“Stone Soup, retold by Jon J. Muth, inspired the class to think about how sharing with others makes us all richer. The decision to work together to make a difference to help the hungry and homeless in their community was an idea that bubbled over,” Melanie Sullivan, Central Bucks School District Community Relations Coordinator said.

It was a team effort: art teacher Mrs. Alderfer made ceramic soup bowls and children and parents made several quarts of soup. Children worked after school and during recess to market their effort as well as count and organize funds, school officials said.

“Parents, kids, and teachers have supported the cause by buying the bowls, soup, and Soup Mates which raised $1,000 for the Doylestown Food Pantry and Homeless Shelter,” Sullivan said.

Sobusiak and many of her students and their parents visited the Doylestown Food Pantry on May 21 to deliver the money the class had raised.
