Crowd Shows Up After Central Bucks Board Members Question Climate Change

Climate change should not be taught as fact, one Central Bucks School Board member said. That comment caused an uproar.

A crowd attended the Central Bucks School Board meeting Tuesday to express their distaste for comments made by board members disputing that climate change is real.

Board members, in public statements during board meetings and follow up interviews with The Intelligencer, have recently questioned the science behind climate change as they reviewed text books submitted for approval.

Specifically, board member Glenn Schloeffel said climate change should not be taught "as fact" and that the district should "bring up all sides" when teaching about the issue, according to The Intelligencer's report.

"It's being taught as fact. If they're going to bring up the topic of global warming, I want all sides of the issue to be brought up, not just one," Schloeffel said, according to the report.

The comments motivated a standing room only crowd to descend upon the board during Tuesday's meeting.

Marlene Pray, a local activist and parent who attended the meeting, tells Patch the turnout was amazing.

"There are no opposing sides when it comes to climate change. There are only facts," Pray said in a statement to the board.

Doylestown Borough council president, who was speaking as a citizen and not on behalf of council, said the comments were "completely deplorable," according to a report in The Intelligencer.

Central Bucks Engage provided a live update of the speaker's comments on its Facebook feed. Check out the various comments here.

In the end, the board approved the textbooks in question: "Biology," by Kenneth Miller and Joseph Levine and "Image Grammar Activity Book," by Harry Noden.
