Rotary Club of Doylestown Names Its 2017 Rotarian Of The Year

Bruce Rutherford of Doylestown has received the group's top honor.

The Rotary Club of Doylestown has named long time Rotarian and past president of the club, Bruce Rutherford, as its 2017 Rotarian of the Year.

Rutherford joined the Rotary club of Doylestown in 2007 and has served on the board since 2009. He is a Doylestown native who has worked in his family’s business, Rutherford’s Camera Shop, since he graduated from high school. Rutherford also worked as a freelance photographer, where he documented weddings, high school sports and community events.

Active in the Doylestown community, Rutherford joined the Doylestown Area Jaycees in 1994, remained an active member until aging out when he turned 40. As a Jaycee, he held many different offices such as membership and community development officer, as well as management development vice president and treasurer. Rutherford has also been a long-time member of Discover Doylestown, formerly known as Doylestown Business and Community Alliance. He served as President in 2003 and helped with many projects, such as the Doylestown Arts Festival and holiday festivities.

In recent years, Rutherford resurrected an old Jaycee project, The Heart of Bucks Car Show, and was instrumental in its evolution into what is now known as Doylestown at Dusk Car Show, one of Doylestown’s largest and most popular events. Doylestown at Dusk raises tens of thousands of dollars annually for the Doylestown Rotary Club to provide local community grants and support charitable initiatives around the world. In addition to his work with Rotary and Discover Doylestown, Rutherford serves on the Doylestown Hospital Authority Oversight Board. When he isn’t at the camera store or organizing a community event, Rutherford likes to work on classic cars and is currently rebuilding a 1948 Ford panel delivery truck. He also likes creating works in stained glass, often from his own designs and working with wood.

“Bruce has been a drivng force in making the Rotary Club of Doylestown the great organization it is,” remarked Amy Parenti, president of the club. “He truly lives and works by the Rotary motto of ‘Service above Self.’ Bruce is immeasurably deserving of this honor.”
