See Unbelievable Damage After Eastern PA Tornado

Buildings collapsed, cars flipped and debris went everywhere. See the unbelievable aftermath of a tornado in Wilkes-Barre.

WILKES-BARRE, PA -- A tornado wreaked havoc on a Northeastern Pennsylvania town Wednesday night, and there are some unbelievable photos and videos of the aftermath. The National Weather Service confirmed Thursday afternoon that an EF2 tornado, with estimated maximum wind speeds of 130 mph, occurred in Wilkes-Barre around 10 p.m.

Six people were injured, according to the NWS. The severity of the injuries was not immediately known.

Photos and videos from the scene show overturned cars, collapsed buildings, downed trees, debris everywhere, and other visible damage. According to the Associated Press, there have been no initial reports of injuries.

The area had been under a tornado warning when the storm moved through around 10 p.m.

Wilkes-Barre Township Police confirmed via Twitter that there were multiple collapsed buildings in the area of Mundy Street. They asked drivers to avoid the area around a shopping mall where the bulk of the damage was seen so emergency personnel could access the scene.

Unbelievable footage and images captured the storm's power, which inflicted major damage to a Panera Bread restaurant, as well as a Barnes & Noble bookstore. The Wyoming Valley Mall, which was hit hard by the destruction, said it would be closed Thursday because there was no power to the area.

A Panera employee told The Wilkes-Barre Times Leader he was in the restaurant washing dishes at the time the storm came through. He told that publication there were "tables and chairs flying through the windows."

Senator Bob Casey made a statement on the storm, telling those in the path of it to "please heed the warnings and follow the directions of local officials."
