Senior Spotlight: Gavin Coyne

As a ninth grader,  Gavin Coyne began playing tennis with his friend and eventual doubles partner Luis Devia.

A four-year varsity starter, Gavin says he always plays tennis for fun and enjoys the game, whether he is winning or losing.

"Coach says I always have a smile on my face," he said.

Gavin's coach, Joann Ochse, provided the following summary of his role as a leader of the Panther boys tennis team over the past four years:

"Gavin...played doubles his freshman and sophomore years, and number 2 and 1 singles his junior and senior years. He was twice selected MVP of our team."

Ochse noted that Gavin is the team's senior Scholar-Athlete, and was selected Captain this season.

"He quietly leads the team by example on the courts," she said. "Gavin will be studying pre-med in college. I know someday he will become a very good doctor. He has good listening skills and is a very caring person."

"It is going to be hard to say goodbye," she added. "It has been a pleasure to coach him for four years."

Since he was in fourth grade Gavin has also played soccer, and he played center mid for Panther Head Coach Mel Moyer.

His favorite pro tennis player is Roger Federer.

Gavin likes biology and will enroll at Marywood University in Scranton, where he wants to major in the Biology Pre-Med track.

He is co-president of the school's spirit club, Slip 'n Slide, whose activities include fundraisers with prizes such as being the first in the lunch line and getting to "pie in the face" a selected faculty member. The club also went tubing at Blue Mountain. During the first week in June the spirit club's annual slide down the steep hill east of the stadium will conclude the year's activities.

Gavin likes to walk, play disc golf at the , and play video games with friends. He has no specific favorite food, but says he will make a weekly trip to the .

Gavin has an older brother, Aaron, and is the son of Richard Coyne and Lori Rhodes.
