School Board Members Question Sporting Event Fees

Some Saucon Valley School Board members would like to see former students admitted to district sporting events for free.

At its Feb. 14 meeting, the Saucon Valley School Board discussed the district’s sporting event admission fees.

School board member Lanita Lum had previously raised the issue because she said she wanted to change the way students and former students pay to attend district sporting events.

“I brought this up because I think there needs to be a definition as to what a student fee is and what an adult fee is,” she said.

Lum said that she thinks former students and college students should be admitted to Saucon Valley sporting events for free.

“We should want the community to participate (in our sporting events),” Lum said. “Students and former students who want to show their school spirit shouldn’t have to pay to get into these events.”

School board member Sandra Miller agreed and said she feels senior citizens should be allowed to get into sporting events for free as well.

Saucon Valley Athletic Director Bob Frey said senior citizens do get in for free if they go to the district athletic office and get a free pass.

Miller said she would like to see the administration put together a proposal to make it easier for senior citizens to get into sporting events for free.

“Many seniors did not know that you could get a pass,” she said.

School board president Michael Karabin said he is a senior citizen and does not mind paying to get into any school events.

“I am a senior citizen and I have no problem paying to see my nephew or grandson play,” he said.

The fees will be discussed further at a future meeting.

In other business, the school board agreed to discuss Frey’s role as a baseball coach in further detail, but also reappointed him to the position of assistant baseball coach.

Some school board members questioned whether his involvement as a coach could constitute a conflict of interest, since he is the head coach's superior off the field.

Frey has been a baseball coach in previous years and board members have brought up the issue in the past.
