Senior Spotlight: Megan Huston

Huston has distinguished herself not only as the only female member of the Panther football team, but also as a reliable Point After Touchdown (PAT) kicker.

Although Panther opponents are rarely aware who #2 is until she removes her helmet, senior Megan Huston has been nearly perfect as the Point After Touchdown (PAT) kicker for Coach Matt Evancho. So far the 5' 9" athlete has made all PATs except for her second attempt in the Pen Argyl game, when the snap was mishandled.

"She is mentally tough," Evancho said when asked to describe Huston. "She has a lot of pressure on her to make the kicks and that pressure never seems to get to her. If the long snapper and holder do their job, I have no doubt she will make the kick."

When asked how she became interested in football, Megan recalled that she and friend Brian Herbold went to Lehigh University's Goodman athletic complex last June to kick field goals. After several additional "practice sessions," she said she began to think "'I might be able to do this!'" A week before preseason started she decided to give it a try and signed up. Evancho gave her some hints about kicking techniques and her Panther football career was underway.

Megan said she really enjoys her role, in part because not many people expect a girl to try out and make the football team. She admits that she was very nervous before her first game, with thoughts of being tackled or missing the PAT running through her head. However when her chance came, she was calm before walking onto the field. She counted her steps, lined up, gave Keith Moser (the holder) the signal to call for the snap and kicked her first PAT. Making that first attempt, she said, is the most memorable thing that's happened since her football career began.

In addition to her new sport, Megan has been playing soccer since she was 5 years old. She began playing on travel club teams as a 5th-grader. Last year she traveled throughout New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania as a member of the Western Lehigh team coached by George Romano. For the Panthers she plays defensive stopper. Megan lists the trip to the semifinals in 2010 as her soccer career highlight.
