Students Participate in Seuss-Themed Reading Event

Students at St. Michael the Archangel School in Upper Saucon Township participated in "Read Across America" and celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday from Feb. 27 to March 2.

In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and in conjunction with a national celebration, St. Michael the Archangel School in Upper Saucon Township took part in Read Across America activities from Feb. 27 through March 2. Students in the primary school (kindergarten through fourth grade) were challenged to read more than 56,000 pages of their favorite books during the week. Teachers held classroom read-ins and younger students partnered with older students to read together. In response, students read more than 70,000 pages.

On Friday, March 2, students in the primary school held a birthday celebration for Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss). St. Michael’s School learning specialist Julie Borden organized the week’s events and gathered her second grade reading group to perform a Reader’s Theater of the Dr. Seuss classic "Green Eggs and Ham."

On Friday evening in the Parish Center of St. Joseph’s Church, the school held a Family Read-In and Pajama Party featuring the Dr. Seuss characters. In recognition of the students' reading accomplishments, St. Michael the Archangel School principal Lori Rutkiewicz appeared dressed as Cindy Lou Who, a character from the Seuss book "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Also in attendance were The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2--all of whom are Dr. Seuss book characters.
