HATBORO, PA —Gamburg's Furniture has officially announced that it will be closing after 94 years in the borough.

In a recent Facebook post, the long-time York Road store states in a video that it served Hatboro and surrounding areas for "nearly a century" and offered a "thank you" to its customers.

Gamburg's then says it's holding a "store closing liquidation" and "going out of business sale" at its 107 S. York Rd. location and "selling down to the bare walls."

The video then continues to tout sales at vastly reduced prices.

Last month, Gamburg's sent out a letter to its preferred customers stating that it would be closing its operations. A store employee told Patch at that time that a closing date could come sometime in the fall.

The letter, signed by owners Sid and Joyce, thanked customers for their "loyalty and support we have received over the many years."

Gamburg's is considered to be one of the properties seeking development under the borough's new Town Center ordinance.

Borough Council Vice President Dave Stockton said at Monday's meeting that the borough has not received any applications pertaining to the Gamburg property and no notification from the business that it is closing.

In late January, the Hatboro Borough Council approved a mixed-use ordinance for a section of York Road from Byberry Road to Montgomery Avenue. The ordinance allows developers to make proposals to build a blend of apartments and retail.

On Tuesday, the Hatboro Planning Commission heard plans to develop the property located at 21-23 and 37 N. York Road.

Plans are also under review by the Planning Commission to develop the former CVS property.

Both plans could come before the board at its Oct. 10 meeting.
