Middle East Diplomat to Speak at Ursinus College

Richard W. Murphy, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs, will speak in Musser Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18.

Ambassador Murphy is the former United State ambassador to Mauritania (1971–74), Syria (1974–78), the Philippines (1978–81) and Saudi Arabia (1981–83). The campus and the community are welcome to attend.

Born in Boston, he is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Cambridge. After serving in the U.S. Army, Ambassador Murphy started his career in the U.S. Foreign Service as Vice Consul in Salisbury, Rhodesia, and then worked for the Middle Eastern Bureau before his ambassadorships. Recently he served as director of the Middle East Roundtable at the Council on Foreign Relations.
