Towamencin Firefighter's Heroics Earn Award From National Liberty Museum

The local fireman's "actions on May 27, 2014 saved a life."

A Towamencin firefighter and a Harleysville Area EMS will both be recognized with the Award of Valor by the National Liberty Museum for their heroics, the Towamencin Volunteer Fire Company announced.

Firefighter and Safety Officer Robert Stratton, along with paramedic Nicole Smith, worked together to save a life on May 27, 2014.

The pair were among the first to respond to an accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike that day. They found a man, Sequiel Serrano, trapped beneath his car and bleeding profusely.

Stratton applied a tourniquet and made the preparations needed for extraction, while Smith performed advanced life support measures inside the car on Serrano.

“These actions allowed Mr. Serrano to remain alive long enough to have rescue crews, and a surgeon, free him from the wreckage,” the Towamencin Fire Company said. “Although everyone involved in the rescue are to be commended, these two individuals made the initial, and most critical “Life Saving” actions and decisions, that helped this call remain a rescue verses a recovery.”
