Towamencin Gets $25K Grant For Veterans Memorial Park

Towamencin Township has received a major grant to develop the park to honor local veterans.

TOWAMENCIN, PA — Towamencin Township has received a major grant to develop a park to honor local veterans.

The $25,000 grant comes from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, State Rep. Liz Hanbridge (D-61) announced.

The money will go toward a master site development plan for the 11 acre space just off of Allentown Road, west of Forty Foot Road. It already includes the Tennis Lukens cemetery, the burial site of several Revolutionary War-era soldiers.

Upgrades could include sidewalks and trails into the cemetery, paths to the nearby Towamencin Village Shopping Center, memorials to honor veterans buried nearby, and monuments to the area's rich lineage. Hanbridge noted General Washington's retreat through the area after 1777's Battle of Brandywine as an example.

It's one of three major projects funded within the 61st District, including $1.43 million for improvements to Wissahickon Park in Whitpain, and $15,000 for a trail study for the PECO Power Line Trails in Upper Gwynedd.

“These proposals would greatly enhance outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy even more of our community’s natural spaces,” Hanbidge said in a statement. “I am delighted that the state has recognized this need and provided our community with the financial support to make these plans a reality.”

All told, $1.46 million in local projects received funding.
