WEATHER ALERT: Schools Close, Speed Limits Reduced, Expect 'Significant Impact on Morning Commute'

Bucks and Montgomery counties got about 5 inches of snow. Four inches fell in Chester County and Philadelphia.

Anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of snow fell across eastern Pennsylvania on Tuesday morning, already making a mess of the Tuesday commute as drivers battled accidents and speed restrictions.

Bucks and Montgomery counties got about 5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Four inches fell in Chester County and Philadelphia.

PennDOT announced a temporary speed limit reduction to 45 mph on the following highways:

  • Interstates 76, 95, 476, 676
  • U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422
  • State Routes 63, 100 Spur and 309

The regular speed limits were restored around 10 a.m.

“Although PennDOT crews are treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow. PennDOT will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear,” according to a statement from PennDOT.

Here’s the hour-by-hour forecast, according to the National Weather Service:

  • Tuesday: Snow likely, mainly before 10 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 24. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow accumulation of less than 1 inch possible.
  • Tuesday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the evening.
  • Wednesday: A chance of snow showers, mainly after 1 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. Light and variable wind becoming west 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
  • Wednesday night: A chance of snow showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 6. West wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
