3. Security

A massive security effort is underway during the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia. Secret Service has created two “Secure zones,” in Philadelphia which will be surrounded by security checkpoints. The Pope’s speech on Independence Hall, scheduled for 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, will be for ticket holders only. A secure zone will be set up in that area. The Parkway secure zone, which surrounds the art museum, has been set up where the Pope will give a public mass on 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27. There is a section for ticket holders only, as well as a public section but all must go through security.

A memo distributed earlier this week by the Pennsylvania State Police’s Criminal Intelligence Center to law enforcement warns that impostors pretending to be first responders could use false identification to gain access to secure areas. Click here for more information on that warning.

4. Impacts

In New Jersey, a State of Emergency goes into effect during the Pope’s visit and remains in effect through Tuesday, September 29 at 8 a.m. Several municipalities in Pennsylvania have declared at State of Emergency during the Pope’s visit. Throughout the region, widespread traffic and transit impacts will be felt, but authorities are urging people to see the Pope.

5. Weather

The forecast on Saturday, when Pope Francis will give his speech on Independence Mall, looks good. Currently, the forecast calls for temperatures in the mid 70s and partly cloudy skies. The forecast for Sunday, which is the Pope’s World Meeting of Families Mass, is not as favorable. However, the outlook has improved from earlier in the week, when rain was thought to be likely. As of Wednesday, the Weather Channel is calling for temperatures in the low 70s and cloudy skies Sunday. There is a 20 percent chance of rain Sunday. What happens if it rains?
