Area Cubs Scouts Get "Hooked on Scouting"
Prospective cub scouts enjoyed a morning of of fishing at BSA Washington Crossing Council's Fishing Derby.
You could say the young boys who participated in the Fishing Derby held at Peace Valley County Park in New Britain fell for scouting hook, line and sinker. The event was held by the BSA Washington Crossing Council as part of their “Hooked on Fishing” initiative to introduce boys entering first through fifth grades to the Cub Scout program.
The novice fishermen were given lessons on how to set up their rod and reel by for different forms of bait, where to place their bobbers and weights and the proper technique for tying a fish hook on their line. Many of the boys were using the rod and reel set they were given as an incentive for joining a local unit. It was a successful event with most participants catching at least one fish. The event concluded with a cookout for the boys and their families; each boy who participated went home with a commemorative patch from the derby.
