Bucks Co. Shop Serving Up 'Grittzel' Hoagie In Honor Of Gritty

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Flyers are actually winning and now fans in Bucks County can celebrate by downing a hoagie named in honor of their scrappy but beloved mascot, Gritty.

The Grittzel is available through the end of the month at Jay's Steak and Hoagie Joint, in the Parkland section of Middletown Township. The restaurant is located at 1205 Highland Ave.

Owner Jay Green said he chose this month to offer the sandwich in honor of the Flyers' upcoming outdoor match versus the Pittsburgh Penguins at Lincoln Financial Field on Feb. 23. It will be the NHL's 27th outdoor match.

The $11 sandwich is as down and dirty as its namesake (not to mention sounding mighty tasty). It's Jay's cheddar pretzel roll filled with homemade Sloppy Joe and whiz and topped with curly fries.

"The Grittzel mixes Philly toughness with the gritty attitude that makes the area special, something the Flyers have," said Green.

Gritty hit the scene like a scruffy, googly-eyed superhero in September, when he was announced as the Flyers' new mascot. After some initial questions about his unconventional appearance, he's become a beloved part of the team, drawing national attention in ways few mascots ever have.

Green rolled out the sandwich in Gritty's honor early this month. Since then, the Flyers have kept up their newfound winning ways. But Green's not ready to take credit for the streak — at least not yet.

"Now that you say it, I might have to keep it around until the end of the season if they keep winning all month like they have ...," he said Thursday. "But they have been on a hot streak since (rookie goalie Carter) Hart got here, not the Grittzel. I wish I could say it influenced them."

The Flyers got off to a rough start this season, but are back in the playoff hunt, having gone 8-1-1 over their last 10 games.
