Falls Police Warn Of Email Scam
The scam targets businesses, with the scammers infiltrating a business and spoofing an employee's email account.
FALLS TOWNSHIP, PA — Police in Falls Township are warning the public about about an email scam that has been reported locally.
Known as the Business Email Compromise, the technique sees scammers infiltrate the email system of a company and create spoof email accounts that look like ones belonging to employees of that company.
Using the fake email accounts — usually those of company owners or other managers — they then ask for money to be wired to accounts controlled by the scammers.
Police urge anyone suspicious of a request to:
- Verify all changes in payment and financial information in person or on the phone with a person you know.
- Use dual-factor authentication regarding changes.
- Monitor IT systems for the presence of malware.
- Monitor and restrict the use of auto-forwarding.
- Use a domain-registration monitoring service.
