Storm Causes Speed Reductions on Lower Bucks Highways

PennDOT is urging people to avoid highway travel, and has reduced speed on U.S. Routes 1 and 422, and State Routes 63 and 309 Friday.

LOWER BUCKS COUNTY, PA — Due to Friday morning's winter storm, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has lowered the speed limit on several local roadways in Lower Bucks.

PennDOT is urging people to avoid highway travel, and has reduced speed to 45 miles per hour on U.S. Routes 1 and 422, and State Routes 63 and 309 Friday.

While the speed restriction is in place, commercial vehicles must stay in the right lane. Speed limits will be reduced on other roads as conditions warrant.

Drivers are reminded that a Tier 2 restriction is in place on the following highways:

  • I-76 from PA Turnpike to New Jersey;
  • I-95, entire length;
  • I-295, entire length;
  • I-476, PA Turnpike to I-95; and
  • I-676, entire length.

Under these restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:

  • Tractors without trailers.
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
  • Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
  • Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
  • Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
  • Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
  • School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches.
  • Motorcycles.
  • Commercial vehicles towing loaded tandem trailers without chains or Alternate Traction Devices (ATDs).
  • All loaded or unloaded school buses, commercial buses, and motor coaches regardless of the availability of chains or ATDs.

* Tire chains or ATDs do not need to be installed, but need to be readily available for use should the vehicle become stuck and not be able to move because of poor traction.
