TULLYTOWN, PA — A Tullytown woman is headed to prison for poisoning her 2-year-old son to death with drugs in a failed murder-suicide attempt.

Jennifer Clarey, 43, will spend up to 50 years in jail after pleading no contest to charges against her stemming from the death of her son, Mazikeen Curtis.

According to the charges, Clarey, on Aug. 25, 2018, gave her son a fatal dose of Vicodin before attempting to take her own life in her home on the 500 block of Lovett Avenue in Tullytown.

Bucks County Judge Clyde W. Waite sentenced her Tuesday to 25-50 years. The charges of third-degree homicide and felony endangerment had been reduced by the Bucks County District Attorney' office from the initial charge of first-degree homicide.

The mother and child were found at about 10:35 p.m. when police officers performed a well-being check. They found Mazikeen and his mother in a bloodied bed. The boy had no obvious signs of trauma, an affidavit of probable cause stated, however Clarey had lacerations to her wrists that appeared to be self-inflicted.

An autopsy revealed the boy's death was caused by an overdose of hydrocodone. An empty prescription bottle of that medication was found at Clarey's residence. It had been prescribed to her and was filled a week before the child's death, the District Attorney said.

Authorities allege Clarey put the drugs in the boy's sippy cup, which tested positive for hydrocodone.
