MIDDLETOWN, PA — Work has begun on a new skate park in Middletown.

Township officials and others attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the new park on Monday. It will be located at Middletown's Community Park.

Middletown-based 5th Pocket Skateparks will be doing the construction on the 8,600-square-foot concrete facility, which will be designed for skateboards and BMX bikes. The work is scheduled to be finished by October.

Township supervisors approved the $325,000 for the new park in June. There also will be new senior fitness equipment, new surfacing for the park's playground and an interactive kickball wall.

Over the past four years, a committee raised $72,000 in donations and the rest will be paid by Middletown and a matching $250,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The facility will replace the township's first skate park, which lasted from 2002-2015. It was shut down because damage made it unsafe.
