Lower Moreland Field Hockey Victorious while Playing for Good Cause

Lower Moreland and Academy of the New Church squared off in a match that benefited breast cancer. The Lady Lions wore pink jerseys and the field was spray painted to help raise awareness.

It was the perfect setting for the Lower Moreland field hockey team.

It was the last game of the season, as it benefited Play 4 the Cure, and it was Senior Day as well. It was clear why it was a big deal for the Lady Lions.

All that Lower Moreland had to do was put together a victory against a very tough Academy of the New Church team.

What made the storyline a little more interesting is that ANC defeated Lower Moreland 5-0 earlier in the season.

“The girls get pumped up for this game,” said Lower Moreland head coach Danielle Kline. “They get pumped up for Senior Day and for the breast cancer awareness. They were definitely focused and fired up.”

The Lady Lions did their part in scoring three second-half goals to defeat Academy of the New Church, 3-1.

“It was a little revenge,” said junior captain Amber Hosmi. “Scoring on them and beating them was great.”

Lower Moreland defeated its opponent in dramatic fashion. The team scored three goals in a four-minute span to put ANC away.

“Knowing that we put in three strong goals was a great feeling,” said junior captain Kristen Nichols. “We had something to play for. This is such a big deal for us. Knowing that we won on our senior day and play for the cure it was a huge thing for us.”

The team raised over $500 in helping the cause against cancer.

Pink was a common theme as the sidelines were sprayed in pink paint. The Lower Moreland team jerseys were in pink as well. Some players also played with pink sticks.

Freshmen Corey Mayer got Lower Moreland on the board first. Lower Moreland wasn’t finished as it scored a minute later to take a 2-0 lead.

“We always try to score within the next two minutes,” said Nichols. “To complete that goal was a great feeling.”

The Lady Lions weren’t done. A minute later, Sophomore Jess Dranzik scored as Nichols received an assist on the play. Lower Moreland refused to let its opponent back in the game.

“We are very proud of that,” said Kline. “Those are the most crucial minutes. Two minutes after a goal you are most likely to get scorn upon.  We tried to keep on scoring to knock down our competition.”

Academy of the New Church did muster a goal, but Lower Moreland stood tall. Junior Claire McPherson finished with 13 saves.

“We just had to calm down and regroup,” said Nichols. “We are good with that.”

For the Lower Moreland field hockey team, it was even more special to end the day of a great cause on a winning note. The Lady Lions got a little revenge as well.

“We are going to end on a good note and come back into the season next year on a great note,” said Hosmi.
