Firehouse Expansion Is a '100-Day' Project

State Sen. Andy Dinniman and other local officials joined firefighters at the groundbreaking ceremony for a construction project that will grow the Malvern Fire Company headquarters.

The held a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday morning for the $1.3 million dollar expansion to the existing station.

By spring, construction crews are expected to have added two new bays with a vehicle exhaust extraction system, bunking quarters and a radio room.

Out of 65 applicants, Malvern Fire Company was one of three Pennsylvania fire stations to receive a federal grant of $1.1 million. Another $250,000 comes from a state grant.

State Sen. Andrew Dinniman, state Rep. Duane Milne and Willistown Township Supervisor Norman MacQueen took part in the groundbreaking festivities.

"The Malvern Fire Company firefighters are heroes for two reasons," Dinniman said. "First, they respond to any emergency, and secondly, they save a tremedous amount of taxpayers' money as volunteers."

Schorn Construction will start work on the 3,000-square-foot project Monday. Assistant fire chief Neil Vaughn said the construction is expected to take 100 days.
