DelVal Venom (12U) Wins PA State Championship!

Anna Torrens powered the DelVal Venom 12U, at the plate and on the rubber, securing the NSA Pennsylvania State Championship, for the upstart organization. On Saturday, 7/11, DelVal Venom went 3-0 in pool play, grabbing the number one seed for the elimination round on Sunday. After another win on Sunday, the Venom faced the Luzerne County Stripes and Strikes, with a record of 52 wins and 12 losses.

Torrens led the DelVal Venom offensive charge with a solo home run in the second. Torrens also handled Stripes and Strikes’ lineup with ease, racking up seven strikeouts, allowing only one earned run on three hits over seven innings, resulting in a 9-1 win for DelVal Venom.

After Torrens solo shot in the second, the fifth inning scoring began with a ground out, knocking in Claire Gerard. Next, Rachel Yocom singled, scoring Meredith Hannigan and Ava Cohen. The Venom tacked on another four runs in the sixth. Cohen kicked things off with a single, bringing home Julia DiSands and Haley Greenwald. Hailee Moran then doubled, scoring Cohen and Hannigan.

Brooke McKeown, the defensive player of the game, put on a stellar performance at shortstop, helping to hold the Stripes and Strikes to only one run. McKeown even turned a double play to end the game!

It was a group effort by the DelVal Venom 12U to advance to the NSA State Championship game. A double play by Camryn Casadei and McKeown helped in a win over the NJ Mystic during pool play. Strong performances and the plate and in the field by Emma Woodcock and Annabelle Donato led to wins over the Pennsbury Gems and the MSI Muckdogs.

The DelVal Venom is a tournament softball organization located in Havertown, PA. The organization, founded by Dennis Moran, had only one team this year (12U), also coached by Moran. While this was only their first year, the team enjoyed quite a bit of success, qualifying for The PONY Nationals, USSSA Nationals and winning the NSA Pennsylvania State Championship.

Venom will be expanding its program for the 2015-2016 season, adding teams at the 10U, 11U and 14U classes. Interested players should attend the appropriate age class tryouts listed below.
