Fighting Tigers Tennis Team Takes Down Penncrest

After beating last year's champs, Penncrest's tennis squad looked pretty strong, but a relatively inexperienced Marple Newtown team had enough fight in them to win the day.

NEWTOWN SQUARE–They may not have the best pedigree as players who have been playing tennis since they were five or the most storied history with tennis, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have fight.

On Monday, Marple Newtown faced a Penncrest tennis team who was high on their season-opening victory over last year’s champs Conestoga. Coach Wendy Schenk, a 35-year tennis coach vet going on in her twelfth year of coaching at Marple Newtown, thought that her team could definitely compete with the Lions.

“All of my doubles team have improved from where they were last year,” said Schenk as she watched three simultaneous doubles matches being played out in front of her. “My first team here (Dan Chung and Vince Patti) are playing really aggressive right now,” she said with an approving nod.

One highlight of the game came early when the doubles team of freshman David Levengood and his partner, senior and co-captain Matt Klepfoer, forced a tiebreaker in the first set against a strong Penncrest duo of Cody Schultz and Michael Dessadario and pulled out the 7-6 victory.

The Tigers managed to finish out the day with a 5-2 overall win. Kevin Nunn and Nick Pizzotti each won their singles matches, and the doubles tandems of Dan Chung/Vince Patti, Dave Fender/John Rody and Matt Klepfoer/David Levengood all came away with victories.
