On Friday evening May 29, the Sun Valley High School Jr. Marine ROTC, Aston, PA, held its annual Awards and Promotion Ceremony. Representing the Marine Corps League, Department of Pennsylvania, was Earle Drake of the General Smedley D. Butler Detachment, Newtown Square. Marine Drake was present to award the Distinguished Citizen Medal, Bronze, to two of the cadets, Stephanie Farnsworth and Anastasia MacAndrews. Ms. MacAndrews was not present due to a family obligation but Ms. Farnsworth accepted her medal in person. The Distinguished Citizen Medal Bronze is the highest medal a Marine Corps League Detachment can award and the third highest medal the National Marine Corps League, headquartered in Merrifield, VA, awards.
The Sun Valley Jr. Marine ROTC Women’s Team took First Place in the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ PT competition held at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Leading that team was Ms. Farnsworth, who later that evening was promoted to Second Lieutenant by Colonel Tom Reimann, the Senior instructor of the Jr. ROTC.
The mission of the Marine Corps’ Jr Marine ROTC is to develop character and citizenship in the youth of America.
