Marple Newtown Leaves Conestoga in The Dust 17-6

Tigers outscore Pioneers 17-6 on Oct. 14.

BERWYN–Five minutes into the first quarter of Friday night's football game, scored its first touchdown on a play by senior wide receiver . That was the only score into the second quarter until the Tigers added three points on a field goal kicked with only a minute and 13 secondes left before end of the half.

While Conestoga's Pioneers played hard through the first half, they simply couldn't close the deal on any of their several downfield drives that showed promise but ended up stalled. That half can be summarized as good defense by both sides and better offense by Marple Newtown.

Conestoga started the second half with a bit more gusto, driving to within 25 yards of the goal line in the first three minutes. A fourth down pass attempt made it to the end zone when wide receiver Andrew DeStefano caught it but could not maintain control, turning the ball over to the Tigers. The Pioneers kept on the attack and scored their first goal with three 3:13 to go in the quarter on a running play.

The attempt of making a two-point conversion was stopped, leaving Conestoga with only six points on the scoreboard. As the third quarter neared its end, Marple Newtown's intercepted a Pioneer pass and carried the ball to the three yard line. Running back ran the ball in for a touchdown. The kick for the extra point was good, leading Tigers 17 to 6.

The Pioneers offense couldn't make offensive headway in the fourth quarter and the Tigers managed to reverse several gains with penalties that mounted up and held their yardage back. The final score 17-6 Marple Newtown was more a result of offense than defense. The Tigers showed their stripes at Friday night's game.
