Become a Darby Fire Co. #1 Volunteer Firefighter. Training and Gear are Provided Free and Volunteers of All Ages Are Needed.

Darby, PA…Looking for a new adventure to start out the new decade in a meaningful and impactful way? Becoming involved with your local volunteer fire department is a great way to contribute positively to your community, while forming lasting friendships with those with whom you serve.
As the remaining days of 2019 dwindle down, many people find themselves making new year’s resolutions. Why not resolve to make a true difference by becoming a volunteer?
The need for volunteer firefighters has never been greater than it is today. About 70 percent of America’s firefighters are volunteers, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Many communities are struggling to maintain their volunteer fire department.

There are a number of ways to volunteer with Darby Fire Company #1 Training and equipment are always free.
- Firefighter – Volunteer firefighters learn skills that can be used to keep their neighborhoods safe, including how to advance a hose line, perform search-and-rescue operations and strategically position ladders. Volunteer firefighters must be 18 years old.
- Fire Police – These volunteers are a crucial component of responding to an emergency. They are trained to help direct traffic, control crowds and working with other first responders on the scene. Volunteer fire police must be 18 years old.
- Training Members – Interested in volunteering but not yet 18? Teens ages 15 to 17 can assist firefighters and fire police at the station, at the scene of emergencies and begin training to become a full member once they turn 18.
If volunteering at an active emergency scene is not right for you, there are other opportunities at Darby Fire Co. #1 that are vital to the operation of the department. Administrative volunteers work behind the scenes to help keep the fire company operational. Duties can include finance, logistics, fundraising, recruitment and retention, vehicle maintenance and information technology.

“Being a volunteer firefighter is one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done,” said Darby #1 president Kevin Carry. “There is nothing like the feeling of helping someone in an emergency situation who is depending on you.”
