Update: Kitchen Blaze Damages Kiyoshi Restaurant

Grease fire ignites ceiling and roof of University Boulevard eatery. Three firefighters suffering from heat exhaustion were treated at the scene.

A grease fire spread to the roof of Monday night, forcing restaurant patrons and staff to leave and causing moderate damage to the building at 6305 University Blvd., said.

No one was injured in the fire, which began shortly after 6 p.m. Police said flames from the grease fire ignited the kitchen ceiling and spread through the restaurant's roof.

“There was a heavy fire on the roof, above the kitchen area, when we arrived,” John Scott said. “We are still trying to determine what happened in the kitchen.”

Scott said firefighters contained the blaze, but the flames damaged the kitchen and water caused moderate water damage elsewhere in the building.

Scott said patrons and restaurant staff escaped safely, but three firefighters suffered from heat exhaustion and were treated by a crew from Valley Ambulance Authority. Scott said the firefighters were not seriously hurt.

The 15  to 20 people inside the restaurant when the fire broke out were told to leave before police and  arrived, according to Kiyoshi manager Justin Zabrowoski. He said staff members attempted to use a fire extinguisher to quell the flames before escorting patrons out of the building.

He described the eatery as being filled with "the usual dinnertime crowd" when the fire broke out. He said the restaurant will be closed for "at least a business day" but will reopen as soon as possible.
