Former Boy Scout Island On Delaware River To Reopen As Campground

A former Boy Scout camp on an island in the Delaware River adjacent to Bucks County will be reopened as a commercial family campground.

Yes, that's right: Treasure Island has been sold.

Haubert Outdoor Oriented Adventure Hospitality LLC purchased the former camp, the Cradle of Liberty Council of Boy Scouts of America announced. The 42-acre island was sold for $500,000, the Bucks County Herald reported.

According to Dan Templar, Scout executive and CEO, the family-owned business will reopen the historic property as a commercial family campground. "Perhaps most exciting from the point of view of Scouters is that our arrangement with Haubert makes Treasure Island available to Scout units so that they once again have access to camping on the island, free of charge, availability permitting," Templar said.

The timeline for the project is not clear.

Treasure Island, which Templar says "holds a very special place in the hearts of all members of the Scouting family," has not been open since the 2008 summer camp season due to repeated flooding. There was also "severe" damage to the property’s infrastructure, and significant changes to the DEP requirements that govern the island, said Templar.

"Ultimately, the only viable and realistic option leading to the reopening of Treasure Island for Scout use is the sale to Haubert. Fortunately, the agreement with Haubert will provide a new generation of Scouts the opportunity to enjoy the experience of camping on Treasure Island," the letter said.
