LAMBERTVILLE, NJ — The co-owners of the Borscht Belt in Newtown and formerly of Stockton are asking their friends and customers for help in supporting an online fundraising campaign for a very close friend in need.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Lambertville, New Jersey business owner Anthony Lukas who suffered a series of strokes that have rendered him unable to talk, walk or perform other daily activities without assistance.

“Unfortunately his family doesn’t have the funds or insurance to support his recovery at a rehab center that is optimistic about him regaining full functionality,” writes the Borscht Belt co-owners on Facebook.

Lukas is well known for his successful business, Iron and Oak Furniture in Lambertville, and is a close friend of Borscht Belt co-owners Mike Dalewitz and Nick Liberato.

"Anthony had a great hand in helping design our very own Stockton Borscht Belt," writes Dalewitz and Liberato. "His children even became employees. Anthony and his kids are part of the Borscht Belt family.

Lukas is a familiar face in the City of Lambertville.

“Whether it’s strapping a sofa to his back and climbing a ladder to deliver it to a second story room, literally saving a man’s life, helping friends during Ida or fostering and then adopting three great kids, Anthony is a force of nature,” says the GoFundMe page.

“All of this suddenly changed. Anthony suffered a series of strokes - each one worse than the last. At the young age of 59, our vibrant friend has been robbed of the use of the right side of his body and the ability to talk.

“Anthony’s recovery depends on the help of physical therapy. He needs to relearn how to swallow, hold his body upright, use the right side of his body and regain the ability to communicate," says the GoFundMe page.

The family’s insurance, however, covers only the first seven days in the hospital and none of the physical therapy during his expected 90-plus day stay at a recovery facility.

“Donations will help with the expenses of care that Anthony desperately needs to get better,” says the page. “Help us help Anthony.”
