SKILLMAN, NJ — Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) will hold its inaugural Harvest Home Dinner on Saturday at the historic Reasoner/True House. The event, to be held from 6 to 8 p.m., will honor the farming roots of the Stoutsburg Sourland community.

Rooted in the rich traditions of African American faith and culture, Harvest Home celebrates the harvest season by gathering around the table to share a meal, stories, and music. Participants will enjoy locally sourced dishes crafted by a talented African American chef and immerse themselves in powerful storytelling that connects the public to the community’s past.

SSAAM is Central New Jersey's only museum telling the rich local and regional stories of African Americans from the time of the transatlantic slave trade to the present day. With the support of a Preserving Black Churches grant, the museum continues its work with this latest event featuring locally sourced dishes, live music, and powerful storytelling from descendants of the True family and Mt. Zion AME Church members.

“Harvest Home Dinner has been happening in the Sourland region for over 100 years," as indicated in a news clipping dating from the early 1900s from the SSAAM archives, said cofounder and historian Elaine Buck.

This month, SSAAM also celebrates the 125th anniversary of Mt. Zion AME Church in Skillman, N.J. The public is invited to join the museum for the special Harvest Home Dinner, honoring African American faith and culture through a toast, a 3-course meal, and reflections on faith, food, family, and fortitude.
