Midway Fire Company Mourning Loss Of Longtime Firefighter

Ron Ewer joined Midway at the age of 16 as a junior firefighter and was still active with 57 years of service at the time of his passing.

LAHASKA, PA — The officers, members and friends of the Midway Volunteer Fire Company are mourning the loss of longtime firefighter Ron Ewer, of Doylestown, who died on Thursday, March 2. He was 73.

His death was announced in a Facebook posting by the Midway Volunteer Fire Company on March 4.

Ron joined the fire company at the age of 16 as a junior firefighter and was still active with 57 years of service at the time of his passing.

Over the years, Ron had many duties with the organization. He served as a firefighter, driver, engineer, chief engineer, and driver training instructor on the fire side. On the administrative side, he was a trustee on two different occasions, the last time for 12 years ending in December 2022 and was a member of the executive board.

“Ron was always around and there for all the company’s fund-raising activities, including the carnival and roast beef dinners. In addition, he set up many other activities and functions at the firehouse,” wrote the firefighters.

His colleagues, friends and peers are remembering him as “one of the funniest guys … always laughing, joking, and having fun.”

One poster wrote, “Ron was of the finest men I have ever had the honor of knowing!”

Another wrote, “A very sad day! Ron, was a firefighter’s firefighter! I swear he could get you water out of a rock!! One of the best engineers God ever gave us. He was an incredible human being and one of the finest men I have ever had the honor of knowing. He was a true asset to our communities!”

“Ron’s stories, impressions and constant jokes and puns were part of the fabric of life in the firehouse,” the firefighters posted. “Ron would often remark, ‘It’s a pleasure for you to meet me!’ Yes Ron, it certainly was.”

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Midway Volunteer Fire Company, New Hope 18938.
