Oops. A Newtown shopping center patron accidentally drove the wrong car home on Wednesday, prompting a stolen vehicle investigation by Newtown Township Police.
According to police, officers were called to the Village at Newtown Shopping Center shortly after 1 p.m. on New Year’s Eve for a report of a stolen car.
The car’s owner, a Lower Makefield woman, told police she had parked the car in the lot about an hour and a half before. When she came out, she couldn’t find the vehicle, which has a push button keyless start. She said she was unsure if she had locked the car doors.

Officers searched the surrounding parking lots and were not able to find the car, so the vehicle was entered into the national database as stolen.
Later that evening, a person called the car’s owner to say they had mistakenly taken the car. The woman who had mistakenly taken the car said it was her husband’s. It was the same model and year and was parked nearby the victim’s car.

At the end of the day, the woman realized that the car she had driven home wasn’t her husband’s. She told police she located an insurance card in the glove box and contacted the insurance agent to explain the situation and get the owner’s contact information.
The officer and owner were satisfied with the explanation and the vehicle was removed from the stolen vehicle database.
