Erratic Driver Was DUI, Had Heroin: Upper Makefield Police

A Newtown man is facing DUI and drug possession charges after he was driving erratically and had heroin in his car, police said.

NEWTOWN, PA — A 49-year-old Newtown man is facing DUI and drug possession charges after he was stopped for driving erratically and had heroin in his car, Upper Makefield Police said.

According to police, Ronald Maurais was stopped in the area of Eagle Road and Woodhill Road around 5 p.m. on Aug. 21 after police received reports that a white Kia was weaving "all over the roadway, driving on the wrong side of the road, and braking inappropriately."

The responding officer located the vehicle swerving across its lane of travel, nearly going off the right side of the road and crossing over the centerline, police said. "On one occasion, the Kia crossed the centerline and into the path of an oncoming vehicle, causing that vehicle to have to swerve out of the way," police said.

The officer stopped the car, and identified the driver to be Maurais. After searching his car, police allegedly found five white wax envelopes that contained heroin. He later confessed to police he had taken heroin earlier in the afternoon, and relinquished nine additional white wax envelopes containing heroin, authorities said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1 in Newtown, court records show.
