Forecasters Eyeing Potential Weekend Nor'easter: PA Weather

Forecasters are eyeing a potential weekend Nor'easter that could threaten the East Coast, including the Philadelphia region.

A nor'easter with rain and strong winds is possible over the final weekend in October, as the cold temperatures will persist, and could combine with a "sharp, southward plunge" of the jet stream, The Weather Channel said Monday.

The Weather Channel, stressing the uncertainty of the storm this many days out, said the large-scale jet stream pattern that is forecast to develop is one "we typically watch for spawning East Coast storms in the fall, winter and early spring."

During the week, a cold front will cause the continuation of chilly temperatures we've experienced over the past several days. Temperatures could be as much as 15 degrees below average through the end of this week in the East, the Weather Channel predicts.

As early as Friday, we could see rain and gusty winds in the Southeast and southern mid-Atlantic as the area of low pressure begins to organize near the coast. "That low could then affect parts of the Northeast as a nor'easter with rain, gusty winds and coastal flooding this weekend. Snow may even fall in the higher elevations of the interior Northeast," according to the network.

If the storm does materialize in the Philadelphia region, it is not likely to bring snow. However, October snow is not completely unheard of in Eastern Pennsylvania. In late October 2011, the region got hit with a nor'easter storm that left three to five inches of snow across the Philadelphia region.

Forecasters say it is still likely the storm could stay offshore, minimizing local impacts.
