The Greater Newtown Exchange Club (GNEC) honored two Council Rock North High School seniors with GNEC’s coveted Student of the Month Award at the Club’s November 9 and December 14 meetings. Pictured above are students Marissa Haynes and Ali Bernstein receiving the awards from GNEC's Elizabeth Soucar.
Marissa Haynes was GNEC’s Student of the Month for November. In addition to being Student of the Month since 7th grade, Haynes was voted Class VP in 8th grade and elected President of North’s Rock Ambassadors mentoring program. She was also chosen captain of her varsity softball team and served as student council VP. Giving back to the community and the world at large figured prominently in a summer trip to Latvia where Haynes worked with underprivileged children in a Hope For Children program where, “I got to meet a lot of great kids that needed both basic resources and love.” Hayne’s short term goals are to finish her last semester with as much fun as possible and make the best memories. For the long term, she plans a teaching career focusing on either English or Spanish. The most important things in Hayne’s life are, “Family and friends and the ability to help others.” She’s eyeballing South Carolina’s College of Charleston as a possible perfect fit and is getting ready to send out her college applications.
Ali Bernstein was GNEC’s Student of the Month for December. Like Haynes, Bernstein participated in North’s Rock Ambassadors, helping for two years in an elementary school mentoring program. She’s also been involved in numerous fund raisers for breast cancer and has helped with hair and makeup for the Autism Cares Prom. Honors include National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Thespian Honor Society, Tri-Music Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society. Bernstein enjoys theatre and has been active in North’s Sock N Buskin theatre group as both an actor and board member. She also loves choir and has been active in North’s Voice Theatre ensemble. At college Bernstein plans a “Voyage of self-discovery” while pursuing a career path in Arts Administration.” She’s considering NYU, Fordham, Wagner, Pace and Barnard as well as schools outside of New York. Her main considerations are, “To find a job that I love so I can follow my heart and be surrounded by friends, family and activities that make me happy.”
