BUCKS COUNTY, PA — The last two Rite Aid stores in the Newtown area are closing their doors, the latest casualties of the pharmacy chain’s financial troubles and its second bankruptcy filing.

The stores, located on Ice Cream Alley in Newtown and the Summit Square Shopping Center in Middletown Township, are among 280 in Pennsylvania going out of business and closing their doors.

Large going-out-of-business signs now dominate the windows at both stores, advertising major discounts on the merchandise still left inside.

In 2023, Rite Aid operated about 2,000 pharmacies. A wave of recent store closings this year has reduced that number down to 764 stores.

In May, Rite Aid announced that it had successfully entered into a series of sale agreements and pharmacy services transition agreements. This includes the rolling transition of pharmacy assets from more than 1,000 store locations across the U.S. to operators including CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens, among others.

“A key priority for Rite Aid is to ensure that as many of our loyal customers as possible continue
to receive the pharmacy services and care they require without interruption,” said Matt Schroeder, Chief Executive Officer of Rite Aid. “These agreements ensure our pharmacy customers will experience a smooth transition while preserving jobs for some of our valued team members.

“For more than 60 years, Rite Aid has been a proud provider of pharmacy services and products to our loyal customers,” said Schroeder. “I will be forever grateful to our thousands of associates for their commitment to Rite Aid and its mission, and I thank our entire team – from store associates to corporate employees – for their dedication to our customers and our company. With their support, we have played a critical role in supporting the healthcare needs of countless Americans across the communities that we are honored to serve.”
