Martin Ogletree to Speak About “Keys to Growth” to Newtown Quakers

Martin Ogletree, a life-long Quaker and a member of Newtown Quaker Meeting will speak about Keys to Growth and Financial Health in a Quaker Meeting at the Newtown Quaker Meetinghouse, 219 Court Street, at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2019. (http://www.newtownfriendsmeeting.org ). Following the presentation, there will be worship in the manner of Friends at 11:00 a.m., with people speaking out of the silence as they are moved to do so. The public is welcome at all events.

Ogletree will speak about his 35-year perspective on the structure, practices and successful growth of Newtown Meeting and the Quaker community in Newtown. He was asked last fall to present a similar talk to the national “Quaker Fundraisers Gathering” of leaders and development staff from Quaker schools, colleges and organizations throughout the country.

Newtown Friends Meeting is an “all-volunteer” Quaker community with no paid staff other than for building and grounds maintenance and babysitters (teenagers of the Meeting). The Meeting has had a robust pattern of growth in recent years, adding a net of 64 new members since 2009. In 2018, 12 new members were added, of whom 6 are adults and six are children. Current Meeting membership is 336, including 55 children.

Martin Ogletree has served Newtown Meeting in leadership roles as Clerk of the Meeting and the head of committees on worship and ministry, nominating, and finance. He has also served on the boards of Newtown Friends School, George School, Friends Hospital, and Snipes Farm and Education Center. He currently chairs the Anna T Jeanes Foundation board and serves on the Jeanes Hospital and Temple University Health System boards.

Martin Ogletree retired as Distinguished Research Fellow at Bristol-Myers Squibb where he led thrombosis research and early clinical development teams in metabolic and cardiovascular drug discovery. This included leading the teams that discovered and developed ELIQUIS. He currently is Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt where he mentors and advises collaborators on drug repurposing, research, and clinical trials.

Martin formerly lived on State Street in Newtown for many years with his wife, Lisa and their sons Joe and Roy.

Newtown Friends Meeting, co-founded by the Quaker artist and minister, Edward Hicks, in 1815, holds services every First Day (Sunday). During the school year, First Day classes for children and adults are at 9:45 a.m. and Meeting for Worship is at 11:00 a.m. Professional childcare is provided. Child Care is provided, and coffee and snacks are served in the Gathering Room after meeting for worship. All meetings are open to the public and visitors are warmly welcomed
