NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — After a successful first season, the popular Newtown Ice House will soon be winding down operations as summer fades to fall.

But before the Ice House closes for the season on October 1, owner Jackie McGonigal said there’s still plenty of time to enjoy some of the best gourmet water ice in the county, including chunky monkey, strawberry rhubarb pie, matcha green tea and peanut butter silk pie.

McGonigal also announced plans this week for one more big event before the season ends at the North State Street store.

During "Sweet September," the Ice House will be encouraging the public to patronize Newtown’s eateries and restaurants and to bring their meal receipts to the Ice House that same day for a 10 percent discount.

“We're encouraging people to go out to eat and then come to us afterward for a water ice,” said McGonigal. “We have a great selection of restaurants in town and new ones opening, like the Bluepoint Grill. You can literally eat around the world in Newtown and then have a gelato or an ice to top it off.”

The Ice House will also be moving its closing time to 9 p.m. beginning September 4.

The September promotion comes on the heels of a successful summer toy drive organized by the Ice House for Neighbor in Need, a Lower Bucks nonprofit that supports neighbors needing a hand-up in Newtown, Yardley, and Levittown.

The drive brought in more than 200 toys, reports McGonigal, including "a big haul" from the Newtown Fire Association.

“Since we are closed in the winter it was nice to be able to collect when we were open and people got a free medium ice if they donated," said McGonigal. “We had a huge outpouring of toys and gift cards."

While the store will close for the season come October, patrons are encouraged to follow the Newtown Ice House on social media for mini-pop-up, cash-only events in October and November.

"People will be able to place orders for pies, quarts, and some other things to go," said McGonigal.

The Ice House will also be collecting turkeys and non-perishable food items at Thanksgiving and Christmas time to provide meals for about 50 families through the Neighbor In Need organization

As their first season in Newtown winds down, McGonigal reported a "wonderful" first year.

"We met a lot of new people and made a lot of new friends," she said. "And we had a lot of great community support. It was better than we had hoped for. People are starting to make it a habit of stopping by.”
