Newtown Twp PD Warn Of Spoofing Phone Scam

Newtown Township Police are warning residents of a spoofing phone scam that involves the local police department's phone number.

Newtown Township Police are warning residents of a spoofing phone scam that involves the local police department's phone number. "We are urging our community to be aware of this scam, especially since the police department's name and phone number are being used for caller ID spoofing," police said.

According to police, a woman reported receiving a suspicious phone call on Aug. 8. She said a man with an accent called and said there would be a warrant issued for her arrest for failing to pay taxes.

Police said the woman recognized the call as a fraud. However, she engaged the caller by asking for more information. The caller said he would "forward her up to the boss."
