Newtown's Centre Avenue Bridge Set To Close For 3 Weeks In January

NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — The new year is expected to begin with a three week closure of the historic Centre Avenue Bridge.

Borough manager Craig Totaro reported at the December agenda meeting that PennDOT plans to close the bridge for three weeks beginning on Monday, Dec 30 to replace the pedestrian walkway across the bridge.

During the first phase of the project - a two week closure in November - PennDOT repaired the buckled south wall, which was damaged in August when a car struck the wall, and repointed the historic masonry structure.

Council President Emily Heinz on Wednesday commended PennDOT and its contractor - Loftus Construction of Cinnaminson, N.J., - for doing a “beautiful job" on the project.

“It looks really good,” said Heinz. “Thanks to Loftus for talking PennDOT into doing the entire bridge.”

The bridge will be closed to all traffic 24/7 until the work is completed. Detour signage will be displayed directing east-west traffic to the Washington Avenue, Jefferson Street, or Barclay Street bridges until the work is complete and the bridge is reopened/

Built in 1796, the Centre Avenue bridge over Newtown Creek carries approximately 4,254 vehicles, daily.
